new fonts in linux

no matter what newly installed fonts are not available in X. To install the new fonts I did the following:
- made new directory /usr/lib/X11/fonts/newfontdir
- copied all fonts to newfontdir
- in $newfontdir ran mkfontdir
- xset +fp $newfontdir
- xset fp rehash
- xlsfonts | grep $fontnames
- chmod 755 newfontdir
- chmod 644 newfontdir/*
- added FontPath to xorg.conf
- shutdown and restarted X

when running xlsfonts all fonts appeared, but are still not available to any applications in X.

any ideas ?

For adding a new font ( ttf ) i follow these steps:-
1. Copy the font file to the /usr/share/fonts/default/TRUETYPE directory
2. Run the command ttmkfdir
3. Run the command mkfontdir > fonts.dir in the above directory
The above steps work fine for me.

May be you are missing the second step( not sure ).

i am trying to install artwiz fonts. These fonts can be seen in xfontsel but are not accesible from fluxbox or any other apps. I've done the following:
- cd $artwizfontdor
- fc-cache -fv ./
- added font path to xorg.conf
- added path to /etc/fonts/local.conf
- restarted X

still nothing.

I have read various posts on this same exact problem and followed all directions, but still nothing.

this is really getting frustrating, it seems nothing works
