If I walk into a store and ask to see a computer with Linux installed on it, is there a command I can use to verify what the salesman says he is showing me?

You don't even need Linux pre-installed, you probably can plug in your live-USB with, say, Ubuntu and do something like lshw or
Code:
lshw -html > lshw
and then open lshw file in a browser for a fancy output. You can also try lspci and lscpu.
[CODE]cat /etc/*release* or
cat /etc/*issue*
[CODE]
Should do it.
(With the wild cards, one or both of those should work with the great majority of distros.)
If you walk into a store that's not a specialty shop in the USA and find a new computer with Linux pre-installed, I'll eat my mouse with mustard on it.
If I walk into a store and ask to see a computer with Linux installed on it
highly unlikely.

most computer salesmen will go nuts if you attempt sth like that, thinking you're breaking their computers.
but i would insist (after all, they want to make a sale, no?)
when they see a beautiful kde desktop, after MUCH shorter booting times, and from a usb stick at that, i bet their eyes will pop out.
