need how to guide on configuring screen resolution / display

so i've searached and searched for help with this.

i've tried three different distros and everything is really big. when i open the display option i only have the option of 640 x 480 for the screen size.

i've opened the xconf file and it shows 1024 x 768 as an option.

what do i do. please help. and keep in mind i am very new to linux...

BTW, i currently amd running Mandriva 2007, with KDE

Can you change it with the kde control center? on my Debian KDE desktop, I can go to K --> System --> Screen Resize.

You should be able to cycle through the resolutions with CTRL+ALT+Plus(+ symbol)

I would double check the Specification s of hte monitor and the Driver you are usig for your video card..

if you are using the vga driver you won't get anything oer 640x480.

If you have the wrong info configured for your monitors Vertical and Horizontal refresh rates, you may not get any of the higher resolutions..

You can always post your xorg.conf, and more detailed information about you hardware.
