Need help with serious errors during install?
I just put together a new system and am trying to install Slack 10 which Ive done several times with no problems like these.
I get segmentation fault errors. Ive gotten " unable to handle NULL pointer dereference at virtual address " Ive gotten " unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 85d3lc8 " I get these during install at varying times, no pattern to the errors. The system has: 3.2 P4 asus p4p800 Motherboard Seagate 80 gig hd 512 mb Kingston hyper x msi DVD/RW msi CDROM I have formatted and have partitions set. I have set the bios to failsafes If anyone has any info that could help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. |
typically seg faults are due to software issues relating to a program trying to access memory not allocated for it. since it is during an install and sporadic in intervals, i would try an app like memtest86 which you can run from a knoppix boot disc at the boot prompt. this will let you know if it might be a memory failure. thats about all i can think might be the issue...

I took these 2 sticks out of another system and they worked fine in that system. Thats a good idea though, I am going to try memtest86. Thanks for the reply.

Check out the posts here regarding a bios upgrade. This could be your problem. HTH |
I figured it out, It was that my Dimms needed to have the voltage upped a little, but I do need to do the bios update also. thanks.
