Hi,
I had faced this few times when the partition on my hard disk had issues, then i had boot in single user mode and did " e2fsck /the/partition ", and restarted the box and until now its running fine.

hope somebody else can throw some more lights on this.

There are no 'lights' to throw on this. It's simple: if you don't shut down your server properly, you'll most likely have journaling issues, and your system will need to be fsck'ed to repair them, period. Hard disk issues? Same thing.
