Need help to Tune Network and Kernel settings

Hi,

We are getting network issue for NFS and memcached in our network. But getting difficulties to diagnose both.
We are not getting any logs in dmesg and messages. Please refer the netstat and ifconfig outputs as follow.
Please let us know if we need to change any kernel settings. We have upgraded network drivers but issue still there.

Operating system- CentOS release 5.4 (Final)
Kernel - 2.6.18-274

Since you're dropping packets, it could be lots of places but I'd focus on forcing the issue with netperf - it is a network stress tool that makes it real easy to drive the network to its max. Then in parallel watch the network to see what it's doing. Lots of tools around, but I'm biased. I just run collectl to watch the network as well as other system components at the same time just to make sure I'm not hammering one of the CPUs (maybe getting too many interrupts from a bad nic?) or consuming too much memory? The thing is you never really know so only looking in one place might send you off in the wrong direction.

I agree but before he starts testing he really should update the OS if possible (5U7 being current) to get access to all fixes or at least undo any previously added tweaks by restoring defaults as some of the sysctls definitely aren't standard. because if one doesn't start with a stable base line for testing then how would one validate the results of any tuning?..
