need help to install OS but my cd drive not working .

I need to install a new OS on my system.
But my cd/dvd drive is not working.

How can i do this as it is very important, other than buying a new dvd drive fom the market...!

alternatives:

* You could remove the drive, place it in another system with a CD drive, and install Linux there, then put it back in the first system.

* You could do a network install, booting first from a floppy or usb drive. This can even be done without access to the internet, if you have another system to act as a server.

* You can install from within an existing installation (Windows or Linux). These will require that you copy the install image over (perhaps using a usb drive).

but how will it be done if its a laptop. i cannot risk taking my hard-drive out.
please let me know is there any solution or not.

Can your laptop boot from USB? If so, there are a couple of articles on the net how to get an iso onto a memory stick; also check unetbootin.

If the distro does not matter, Ubuntu Netbook Remix comes as an image that uou can dd to a memory stick; others possibly as well.

but i got few other queries as well.

problem : cd drive not working in a laptop

need: to install/upgrade OS

case 1) can i do something similar if i need to install windows OS, if there is no working OS currently in laptop.

case 2) can i do something similar if i need to install windows OS, if there is working windows OS.

case 3) if i have a working windows OS, how can i upgrade it. ?

i will be really greatful if i get answers for the above.

Maybe something like How To: Install Windows 7/Vista From USB Drive (Detailed 100% Working Guide) will help you.

1) is answered with above link; if not, do a search for install windows from USB
2) sounds like the same question as 1 (sounds just like a re-install of windows which is the same as an install (in my experience))
3) upgrade from what to what

Your questions are now more related to Windows than to Linux so you basically can get better help in a Windows oriented forum (this is LinuxQuestions.org).
