Need help choosing a desktop manager
Hi,
I need help on deciding a desktop manager for a small PC our student society uses for a web server. Its a 833 MHz Pentium 3 with 384 megs of ram. We get around 400 page hits a day and run apache + PHP + MySql. I have only used KDE and Gnome as DMs but I don’t know how they will perform on the given hardware so I was thinking of using XFCE or fluxbox (no experience with them) my questions are. 1) Would this hardware be able to run KDE 3.40 + the web server (without KDE causing much overhead)? If not 2) Which "lighter" DM is easier to configure and wouldn't be much of a hassle to get running. Thanks PS: I am thinking of running Debian (sid) as the distro. Any comments regarding the distro will also be welcomed. |
Hey
it will run gnome or kde but to be honest they are really blotted and have a load of processes which run with them. I have heard that there is gnome-light (a smaller version) and you can get that for debian etc. I have been experimenting a load with really small ones like icewm and window maker. I'm liking icewm a lot but all the configuration really has to be done through the config files (which are quite eaasy to play with). If you google for window managers, there is a load of them hamidh |
I've used a few window managers and I prefer IceWM even though it doesn't (that I know of) have full support for the systray.
Gaim and Azureus make systray like icons fine but KPPP doesn't. |

fvwm is good, but config is a pain. And don't use the DE's, only WM's if what you want is extra resources for the server.
