Nedit memorial

I know nedit was no longer maintained, I know about limitations in utf-8 support and so on... but it was by far my preferred text editor. Every time I install a new distro, I compile nedit from source and it works well. Now it seems definitively gone! It looks like the historical nedit website has been acquired by a commercial company. No trace of the original text editor anymore. Farewell, good ol' nedit!

Good thing about open source is that it ain't dead until the last copy of the tarball is lost. However, has there been an official announement of nedit's death? maybe the author just neglected to renew the domain name.

Have a look on sf - been a while since I had to compile it, so don't know how good the package is.

Thank you for your replay. Indeed, there isn't an official obituary of nedit. Moreover, I forgot that nedit is hosted by sourceforge (thank you syg00). Anyway, I'm afraid that all the contrib stuff and the optional syntax highlighting patterns are lost. I'm going to start a quest now.

Are you sure it's dead? It conspicuously present in the Ubuntu repositories for something that is dead...

You're right. It seems nedit is definitively alive! Starting from the sf project, I found that there is an active CVS repository, there are still mirrors of the original ftp site which provide all the contrib stuff and a site providing a tarball of the latest source code on a regular basis.

I'm sorry. Looking at the nedit.org site made me to hasten a wrong conclusion. As mentioned by abolishtheun, maybe the author did not renew the domain. Long live to nedit! ;)

I really liked nedit as well, but after a while it stopped compiling correctly because of odd dependencies so I just switched to using geany as a text editor and IDE.

I had some compatibility problem on some machines trying to install the last stable version 5.5. The latest snapshot seems to have resolved these issues and now nedit works like a charm using openmotif version 2.3. If you want to give it a try (just out of curiosity) you can download the latest snapshot, here.

Anyway, geany looks really interesting. I will give it a shot! Thank you for sharing it.

I actually did try the snapshot and it did work, but I can't copy and paste correctly :( Either way geany is a good replacement I think.
