navigating through man (for example)

I am new to linux, although many years ago I worked with Unix for a while.

I know that man will tell useful stuff about lots of utilities and i have found that having got in to man, the space bar will move me down a 'page' and the enter key will move me down a line.

How do I go back up - short of pressing 'q' and then starting from the beginning again?

It's probably using the "less" pager, in which case you can use 'b' to move up a page. Read the "less" man page for more information.
