Hi, Just got LM 8.0 installed so now I have a dual boot computer, but my modem doesn't work under Linux. I checked the compatibility database. It's a winmodem. Any suggestions on modems that I can PNP in windows that will work easliy on Linux?
Thanks

almost all external modems work with linux, internal modems are not worth the pain and suffering required to configure them. get a usr/3com sportster external 56k and get on with your life.

USR 56K Performance Pro

This is a internal PCI modem. It works automatically (no tweaking at all) with 2.4.x kernels. Unfortunately I have had a TON of problems with diconnects (both in Windows and Linux). Sometimes it makes strange noises when dialing and won't connect. I suspect I got a bad one and I plan to RMA it. If you try this one just make sure you buy it someplace with a good return policy.

i had a creative modemblaster external with some kind of funky digital signal processor circuit, it spent all of it's time retraining and very little time moving data. don't know if it was just a defective unit or an incompatable modem (didn't try a second one) whatever you get, save your receipt
until your positive all is well.

Motorola ModemSurfr External is a good one.

zoom internal PCI modem 2920 is very easy to install under Mandrake.

Where did you get your Zoom modem?

I've heard about that modem, but never seen one in a store. Where did you get it?

i used a Best Data 56k v90 whatever once, it worked well as even the box stated it is Linux compatible. cost like 20 bucks at CompUSA.

any external modem with an RS232 port should work fine with Linux and Windows. Might even be a bit faster than an internal modem cos there is less load on the processor to do all the work!

Has anyone had any experience using a usb to rs232
adapter to connect an external modem to a laptop?
