Unhappy MySQL...

hola,

i have seen my error message on many posts - in the log it tells me that "can't start server/bind on tp/ip port/address already in use."
and most of what i see ends in telling the person with the problem to uninstall and reinstall... so my question is kinda silly i guess but i am new here-
How do i uninstall when i installed a tar.gz file??
... i see lots of posts about how to uninstall rpm's but i didn't use one to install in the first place (it kept freezing when i tried to use the rpm so i had to use the tar.gz instead)....any help would be greatly appreciated!

go into the source directory you used and run "make uninstall"

but if the port is already in use reinstalling is pretty much irrelevant.... IS that port in use? maybe mysqld is already running.....

in use??

well honestly i'm not sure...lol...
first i tried saying

/sbin/service mysqld stop (which i got from another post here)
and i would get this message

bash: sbin/service: no such file or directory

and then i put in

netstat -ntlap | grep 3306 (another attempt from a post here)
and i got

TCP 0 0.0.0.0:3306 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 625/mysqld
wasn't sure what that ment, but figured it could mean sql was running, so tried a kill command (not sure if i entered it right though)

netstat -ntlap | grep 3306 | kill -9

does all that mean that its just mysql is already running and i like need to look at permisions or something (how do i look at permisions for mysql?) if its running how do i stop it to start it again?
