I had a problem similar to that, when I used smbmount to mount a network share, and someone turned off the other computer. Get lsof, and make sure no processes are trying to access the drive, then edit /etc/mtab for any instances of it, then try umount /mnt/c and it should unmount, and not give you any errors when you ls in it, it should just be a empty dir
