My Linux in Schools Idea
Hey all! I had a pretty cool brainfart the other day and figured I would share it with you and see what you think of it. It's nothing revolutionary, but seems pretty cool. This idea is open source, of course, so if there are any computer teachers out there please feel free to try this out and let us know how it works.
Basically, I visualize a computer lab w/ about 30 PCs at an elemetary or high school. Each computer has linux installed (of course!) with the OpenMosix kernel (ie. from ClusterKnoppix or so). Sure, it's not as powerful as a Beowulf, but it's sure easy to control. Assuming the computers come with the default 256 meg RAM, the linux cluster would total 7.68 gigs of RAM...pretty cool. ANYWAY, I visualize students using the computer lab for the usual learnings during the day. Overnight, the cluster can be used for processing seti@home or folding@home data. The students can then track and present the amount of data processed by the cluster in school newsletters and such. I think it would be a unique learning experience.
Let me know what you guys (and gals) think!
