I have RedHat Linux v9.0 installed and I am aware of the fact that Java does not come with Netscape v7.2 but this was ok with me because after I downloaded NS, I planned to download Java anyway.
So after downloading NS and reading why they no longer include Java with the installation, I then proceeded to follow the link they provided to where I could download it.
Once I had downloaded the latest version of j2re-1_4_1_03-linux-i586-rpm.bin, I extracted the RPM file from it and installed it (from root). I then went to a site that I knew offered Java applets and could not see them. Instead I got an error message telling me that I needed the x-java-vm plugin which I then downloaded from another site and still no luck.
In short, I have been round and round with this thing for almost the entire day now and I've tried a lot more things than I've stated here and still no luck whatsoever. Perhaps if I could find the proper Java file(s) I need in an i386 format (for RedHat 9.0), this would help. I don't know but this whole thing has me completely worn out.
Any help you kind people can offer would be greatly appreciated and thank you ever so much for your time!
Prior to version 1.3 of Mozilla, i was not able to get java to work either. I know you are using Netscape, but I dont use Netscape because it's usually behind on Mozilla.
In Mozilla 1.3 It was a snap installing jre-1.4.1.
The thing you need to make sure is in place is the symbolic link to the java program from the netscape plug-ins directory. My netscape/mozilla plugin directory is in :
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
My java plugin directory is :
/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.1.02/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/
so i am using the following symlink :
ln -s /opt/sun-jdk-1.4.1.02/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/moz
illa/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
That should work if you can find your jre base directory (usually /opt/something) and make a symlink to your netscape plugin directory (probably /usr/lib/netscape/plugins).
Hope this helps..
Im running Gentoo on my example above.
This is the similar case in Opera. A simple link to the the plugin and Walla. The problem is not all the applets work. I have execpted the fact that browsing on linux is not going to be as nice as browsing on Windows.
Ok I have done all the instructions. I can see a java folder in the "/usr" directory. (another words "/usr/java") I open a teminal su to root and make a symbolic link from the "plugin" of the java folder to the "plugins" of my /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins folder and nothing works. In fact my link keeps going to my "home" folder, so I delete it and try it again and it ends right back up there. What am I doing wrong? This is getting very fustrating.
I just spent a couple of hours trying to install this java thingy and come to find out the only thing holding me up was a little "space".
Turns out I need to add a space between the "/usr/java" folder and "/usr/lib/mozilla folder. A simple little thing like that just makes ya want to repeatedly hit yourself in the fingers with a hammer.
Anyways there is one of my stupid little success stories.
