Must LiveCD be a CD?

Is there any way to make a LiveCD (such as for Ubuntu) still work (as a LiveCD would) on a removable hard drive? I mean, I've read about the Wizpy and am thus curious if I can hack such functionality onto either my iPod (5th Gen) or a removable HD.

Is there some way to hack at the ISO, or would I have to do this from the OS's source code? Or is there something really simple that I'm overlooking? ... And would this take a huge amount of work to accomplish?

Gracias

And please forgive me if I am a newb.

Many people have put Knoppix "LiveCD" and other distros onto USB Flash/Thumb drives.
Here are instructions I used to put Knoppix on a 2GB USB Corsair "Flash Voyager"

http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/14738/print

This can be used on any computer capable of booting up to USB.
There is also a provision for a "Persistant Home Directory" with Knoppix, for saving settings and /or files for future boots to the same computer, but you can load the Knoppix "LiveCD" residing on your USB drive FRESH to *any* USB boot capable computer.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot! If I run in to difficulties, I'll post them here. And then grovel for forgiveness.
