Multiple Tar Requests

Hello,

I have been testing a backup script to a SCSI tape drive and all seems well. I have multiple archives stored on the tape.

After the tape is rewound I execute tar -tvf /dev/nst0 and the first archive is listed, after this operation is completed I have to execute the same command twice inorder to get the next archive, the first command does nothing.

I tried executing mt -f /dev/st0 fsf 1 after the tar command but this does not fast forward the tape to the next file index.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dan

Have you tried tar -M (or tar --multi-volume)? The man and info pages seem to be a bit lacking in distinguishing what a volume is. Is it multi-volume (as in more than one tape), or is is multi-volume (as in more than one archive volume on one tape). Sorry I can't be of more help. It's all I can think of to try.
