Multimedia keyboard on a linux box

How could I get my M$ dedicated multimedia keyboard to interact in a more opened way with the multimedia apps?

Eg: pressing the "Mute" button should toggle the mute feature on the master volume.

Currently my keyboard acts as a plain stupid 101/102 keys kbd.

My distro : Debian woody
