mplayer plays videos slow

When I play mpg video file in mplayer, the playback is very slow...mplayer showed a warning message that I may have a very slow computer. I tried to disable buffering as given in the tips given in the alert message, but that did not help.

I can play video files in Windows 98 normally. Then, how can I normalise the playback speed of video files?

I have Redhat 8.0 with KDE 3.....

that happened to me when i was running the wrong drivers for my video card/sound card...
make sure u got the right ones installed

You are using GTK GUI which is somewhat buggy.
Try running mplayer from CLI

I had the same problem, then I tried diffrent audio option
try command line...
gmplayer -ao sdl movie.mpg

Or try changing -ao option.
