mplayer libGL.so.1 error

I use apt-get to install mplaer[586/686] to my debian 3.x version with kernel updated to 2.6.x verion.
however when running mplayer it issues such errors:
Code:
mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
what files i may miss when install maplyer? for seemly there're reference to, one in X lib and one in /user/lib; yet i don't know it at all. even though i link ligGL.so as libGL.so.1. it didn't work at all.
I appreciate any sugestion, sincerely.

or alternatively recompile mplayer and it will not look for the GL libraries in the first place. obviously tis is only useful if you don't acutally want GL.
