mozilla plugins not working!

I download the java runtime enviroment and symlinked libjavaplugin_oji.so to /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins/ yet still when I visit a web site that requires java, it tells me that I should download the Java runtime enviromnet.

same thing goes for flash, I downloaded the flash player plugin (flashplayer.xpt libflashplayer.so) and they automatically installed into my mozilla plugins directory, yet when I visit a site with flash, mozilla tells me that I need to download the flash plugin.

What gives? any suggestions?
(FYI: im using the mozilla that came with slackware 9.1)

You might be using the wrong plugin...

Just installed 9.1 my self from the 4 disk set. You should be running Mozilla 1.4 and using the Java gcc3.2 plugins already. I noticed that flash was already set up as well. Is this the down load version?
Any who: download 1.5 from mozilla.org
run the install as root.
as root also:
"ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/local/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so"

It is important to use j2re1.4.2 from Sun
also you must use the ns610-gcc32 plugin for it to work.

As for flash, after you get Java going this one is easy. Run the install as root in a term.
tell it that your install path is /usr/local/mozilla
(When it asks you.)
it should do the rest.
Check it over:
open mozilla and look at the ABOUT under the Help.
Should be Mozilla 1.5
Look at plugins
you should see a bunch of java and 2 for Flash.
If you type mozilla as a joe user on the term line and 1.4 starts you will need to fix your link in /usr/bin/mozilla.
I hope this helps. Happy Holidays!
Feend
