Moving Linux Installation from One Partition to another?

Hello...

I am currently working on a laptop with Linux (Ubuntu) and XP installed. I have a spare partition (around 6GB) that I want to install and configure Linux on (Linux From Scratch), but the thing is, if the installation is successfull I want to copy (to removable device) the Linux From Scratch installation from the partition it was installed to (hda2) and delete the current Linux installation (Ubuntu) and associated partitions, re-partition as necessary (if at-all) and then copy what was on hda2 back onto one of the new partitions (not necessarily hda2).

It may seem easier to delete Ubuntu, partition and install but I specifically want to install, backup new installation, repartition and copy backup installation back onto new partitions, if for no other reason than to be able to do other work using my computer while Linux is compiling on the spare partition.

I can think of no reason why installing to a partition, copying, repartitioning, and copying backed up installation onto fresh partitions can't be done as after all it is just data on a drive, but at the same time maybe I am missing something!!!??? The only thing I can think of is ensuring the Grub.conf (menu.lst) file is pointing to the right partition.

Does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, or even instructions???

Thanks in advance.

You will need to edit /etc/fstab to mount the new partitions instead of the old ones, as well as editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst entry to boot up from the new partition.
