Movie Player

Well as you probably all knwo theres like no media support with Fedora I managed to get XMMS playing Mp3s from using FedoraFaq.org but I am still in need of playing WMVs and MPGs and DVD movies.... I have tried downloading some codecs and such but I havent had any luck at all with any of them... I dont really care what media player I use for videos as long as its easy to use, has a GUI, and works well...Im coming from Windows Media Player. I have tried Helix and Totem but niether worked Im using FedoraCore3 with all packages installed

The best player is MPlayer, supports all the formats you ask for, the codes are available from the site.

If you use KDE, I'd recommend KPlayer, which is a KDE frontend for MPlayer.

Also theirs a Firefox plugin which allows it to support embedded video on websites.

MPlayer does have a GUI front-end, its even skin-able ( Skins available from the website ) You can start it from the command line, but it isn't required.

mplayer own front end is gmplayer. running videos through a teminal is so so so easy... it takes much longer to play them through a waste-of-time gui.

To install the codecs ...

Navigate to the directory:
/usr/lib
Create the directory:
win32
(/usr/lib/win32)

Get the codecs from "MPlayer" website
( I think what you want is "essential codecs package")

Untar it, enter the directory, and move everything to /usr/lib/win32

MPlayer, Xine, and many other players will find them here.

As Leonscape said, I've been using Mplayer with the KPlayer frontend
with good success.

There are other frontends available, use the "related projects" link
on the MPlayer site for more info.

Videolan's not good. It's excellent. And unlike Mplayer, it supports DVD Menus. Playing a DVD without the menus is annoying, especially if it's got really cool menus (like on the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon DVD).

Yes.

The codecs can also be downloaded from the site. essential codes, and binary codecs are the two sets that you need, and they cover just about everthing.

He was referring to mplayer. Videolan Client (VLC) comes with all the codecs you'll need already. It supports WMV. According to its website, it supports WMV 1/2, but not 3. I think WMV3, is the WMP9 format. The only program I've ever heard that supports that is WMP.
Go here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html for a list of supported formats for VLC

So I downloaded it and extracted it and ran the command as stated, and I received all of the error messages as listed above, but where did it install to? I looked around and dont see any VLC or VideoLAN in /usr/bin or other places ive looked. Where is it locaed after all of the RPMs are installed? Also are the warnings and errors anything to worry about
