Move image to another machine

Firstly linux greenish.
As part of our DR work im trying to move an image of our Production server to a test box (new hp proliant > old proliant)Ive beeing using norton ghost with sysprep on wintel boxes with no issue. I managed to take an image of production box , HP dl380 5i array controller Red hat ES 3 , but predictably it failes to boot after cloning it to the older server with a 3200 array controller. Error is "Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs"

I guess im not sure weather or not to pursue this avenue or not. Am i better trying a different option.

The Critical data is SAN stored via fiber hpas so all im taking is the os config which doesnt change really , hence the ghost image.

Tks all.

The partition names could have changed because the drive technology is different. If the old machine has IDE drives and the new one SATA, the partition names will have changed from /dev/hd?? to /dev/sd??.

Someone else might have a better option, but I'd burn myself a live CD and find out whan the new devices are called, track down the /etc/fstab file and edit it to reflect the changes.

I suspect you'll have to re-jig grub/lilo as well.

Im would like to take a image of my linux because I keep making it not work, it would be so much easyer to just put restore it from the image, do you use norton ghost? Is there any linux based alternatives?

There is Ghost for linux which is free to download. I havent tried it because creating the image is easypeasy with ghost. Not being reliant on similar hardware when clonig to another box is the big issue for me. Is there anything similar to sysprep in Linux i wonder.....mmm..it would make life easy .
