U will need to edit ur XF86config

U will have to add
Option "Emulate3Buttons" False

This will turn off the paste

To make it scroll, add
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Also change your mouse type from "PS/2" to "IMPS/2"

That is it.

i found how to get Opera7.1 to have panning capability already
try press shift and middle click inside a webpage, there you can tell the center click how to perform when next time you click.

but his only solve half of the problems i would like this panning capability to all the linux apps like quanta, kwrite, openoffice and etc. panning is a great tool to read many many text.

when i middle click it will always paste the lates copied text.
i dont want that...

It is 3 button mouse, right?

U still need to edit ur xf86config

as far as your mouse problem if all the appropriate modules are loading then when you cat /dev/input/mice you should see a bunch of weird chars. then make sure you have a section in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file under InputDevice that points to your USB mouse like

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "USB Mice"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

i use IMPS/2 for my logitech usb wheelmouse, and the ZAxisMapping is so i can scroll.

U can also try doing a search at LQ. This is a pretty commonly asked question
