Mouse problems in openbox, but not GNOME?

Ok, I'm running Debian woody, which was built up with net install. When I installed X Windows system (xfree) I decided to use openbox with it, so I installed that too. When I rebooted and tried it out my mouse didn't move and my screen was seemingly frozen at a greenish wallpaper. I did install mouse support at modconf successfully, and correctly configured (I think) my mouse at X windows' config. So, for no reason really, I uninstalled openbox and installed GNOME. This time my mouse works fine, and so on. Why would this be?
