Mouse pointer clicks a few centimeters to the left.

I've been dealing with this for some time now. I don't know if this is considered hardware or software, so I'm being safe by posting to General. I hope thats ok. I'm a newbie to this forum.

I first noticed this on my computer I built myself. When running Mandrake 8.2 every once in a while the mouse would, seemingly randomly, shift to the right a few centimeters. The effect is that I have the pointer, and I point it at something, and click, and whatever is 2 centimeters to the left is clicked. I hope that makes sense.

This went away when I upgraded to Mandrake 9.0, and I promptly forgot about the problem.
However, I then moved to Libranet 2.7 Classic, switched my apt-sources to unstable and did a dist-upgrade so I'm running Debian Unstable. However, my kernel is 2.4.19.

Could that be the problem? I don't remember what kernel Mandrake 9.0 was running.
If thats the case does anyone know how to update kernels in Debian? I know it's easy, but I don't know how.

I have an IBM mouse that Knoppix says uses the ImPS/2 protocol. It seems to work okay except for this weird pointer shift problem.
Also, once it happens, again, seemingly randomly, it won't go away by simply restarting X. If I kill X and then start it again the problem still remains. At first I thought it was some service that was running that was screwed up like console mouse services, but I killed those and restarted them too and that didn't fix it. Unfortunately the only way I know of fixing it temporarily is to reboot the entire machine.

Anyone have any ideas?
I'm running XFree86 4.2.1.1 and the XFree driver is reported as a Trident Cyberblade (generic). I'm running at 1280x1024 at 60 Hz I believe. I doubt that has much to do with it, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Thanks
-JT

Try the suggestion on this link, it worked for me with SuSE 8.0:
