Question Mounting Venix 80286 file system

I am looking for a way to recover data from a SCSI drive that uses the Venix 80286 file system format. I can see the drive in FDISK, and it identifies the file system as #40, Venix. I just need to copy all of the files from that file system onto a more modern file system.

I am running Red Hat Enterprise, but could change to a different installation if this capability was available in a different build.

If you might know how to do this, but don't feel it is worth your time to post or research, please let me discuss $ compensation for you.

Thanks,
Jammin

Wow

Have you been using that system right up till now? If FDISK can successfully ID your filesystem, I would expect LINUX to be able to do the same, and mount it and copy your files. I am using Mandrake 10.1 (which is based on Redhat), so I'm not sure I can tell you specifically how to do this.

On my system it is easiest to mount other file systems using the GUI... the command line can really be a pain when it comes to this. Do you know how to mount, say, FAT32 or NTFS on your Redhat? Does that method also work for the system in question?

If no one else responds more specifically to this, maybe look for help on how to mount FAT32 or NTFS on your system (you should be able to find info on this if it isn't already at your house) and then try applying that to VENIX.

BTW

I was by no means guaranteeing that the distro I use will be more adequately equipped to do this than the one you already have. I don't have a VENIX system to test this on myself, otherwise I would try it out for you

Have you tried the mount command with the filesystem set to auto?

e.g. mount -t auto /dev/hdb1 /mnt/venix

Well, from what little information I could find Venix is a derivative of System V Unix. I could not find exactly what filesytem its uses whether it is ffs, ufs, or System V.
Try ffs or ufs and see what happens.

Unhappy

To answer one of the quesitons, in the reply sent by others, the goal is for doing data recovery on a drive. I don't have/know of a distribution that supports the Venix FS and so that also implies I haven't been using the FS at all up to now.

A while agao I did try mounting the drive in the way that okmyx suggested, I don't remember the exact error; but that didn't work. Maybe I will try again with the exact syntax that was suggested.

I also performed a source code search on "venix" in the Red Hat Enterprise edition and didn't see any clues about support.

Thanks very much for the posts so far and I will keep looking and post any successes.

As mentioned in a previous e-mail, if someone can help me figure it out, I am willing to compensate because my own knowledge and skills are lacking in this area. I would also be happy with even a read-only solution.

venix system V manuals

This is probably now irrelevant, but I have a full set of venix system V manuals that I need to get rid of soon.
If anybody would like them, please get in touch.
