Mounting /tmp on different disk

I'm trying to mount the /tmp directory on a different internal hard drive ('cuz I don't want temp files on my main HD). When I do 'mount /dev/hdd2 /tmp' and 'chmod 1777 /tmp' then logout, the login doesn't come up. Luckily, when I reboot, all is well. Any advice?

Are you editing your fstab file to point /tmp to the new location? And is this new location on a formatted filesystem?

I did once and had to boot from the RedHat install disk in rescue mode change it to noauto because it wouldn't load past the CUI login.
