The output for "ls -l /dev/cdrom is:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 May 28 09:37 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdd

When mount using " mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom"
the output is :

mount: block device /dev/hdd is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: Not a directory

make a new mount mount of your choice.
how about cheese
mkdir /mnt/cheese
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /mnt/cheese

I had create mount cheese and tried " mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /mnt/cheese"

This is the output that I get:

mount: block device /dev/hdd is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: Not a directory

if you wish,
you can try
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom
mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom

or post the output of dmesg
try a different cdrom disk

I had try out all the mount command but still unable to get mounted.

Here's the content of dmesg:

if you are using grub, make sure for your cdrom having ide-scsi legacy emulation loaded
say, your drive is a primary slave, add this to the end of the boot line:

hdb=ide-scsi

for secondary master,

hdc=ide-scsi

etc.

the I/O error was caused by ide-scsi emulation not being loaded, most of the time.

now you should probably able to access the device in the /dev/scd0

now then try to mount the cd using

Code:
mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom
that should be fine now.

for lilo, i guess i can't shed my light on how to load the ide-scsi legacy emulation. ask around

aha, as i skim thru your dmesg ...

SAMSUNG CD-ROM SCR-3231, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

this drive needs old ide device modules to be loaded (if i remember correctly, i saw it somewhere...can't find the page tho)

do an insmod of the module (sorry i forgot which one again) but that's a starter for you to begin with

What's the function of insmod ?
I had tried most of the command available but get nothing.
How do I check whether the cdrom having ide-scsi lagacy emulation loaded or not?

lsmod lists the modules running.

it looks like your drive is having trouble with udma
hdparm -d0 /dev/hdd will turn it off

then try mounting
mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom

I had tried " hdparm -d0 /dev/hdd" and this turn off the dma
I tried mount the cdrom and it works....

But I want to know, why turning off dma enable the cdrom to mount?
Another simple question, what is udma?
Thanks for the time looking on this threads.

udma is short for ultra direct memory access mode.
it's just a way to transfer data from the cdrom to
wherever. when you turn if off the drive is a little slower.

you could try a shorter or better ide cable to your cdrom,
and set it to master instead of slave. the drive is just
messing up the way it is set up. if there's another
drive on the cable with it, switch where they are attached.

<i>I had tried " hdparm -d0 /dev/hdd" and this turn off the dma

I seem to be having the same problem as you did, but this did not enable me to mount my cdrom. I'm running Suse 8.2 Professional, and the cdrom was working until it crapped out on Friday. I initially thought it was the cd I was using, which was a music cd that I had burned on a CDRW, but the regular cd's I have aren't working and neither is the data cd I tried. Initially I had problems getting sound out of the player but I switched to using XMMS which seemed to work. Now it won't read any cds at all. (I'm extremely new to Linux, but learning.) Please advise.

Please ignore my previous post. It turned out to be a bad cd rom. I got a new one from our IT guy and now I have no problems. Thanks anyway.
