mounting cdrom

how to mount the my cdrom and cdrw, as well as my floppy drive?
i referred to the book which ask me to type for example:
mount -t /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

but it doesnt work for me..
an i dont have the permission to mount it..
further more, isnt that the cdrom suppose to be at /dev/cdrom ?

but at the mandrake control center, it shows me that my cdrom is hdc..and my cdrw is hdd...should't them be cdrom and cdrom1 ?

Hi viper96477,
things aren't as complicated as you think.

how to mount the my cdrom and cdrw, as well as my floppy drive?
AFAIK, Mandrake comes with supermount by default. All you should need to do to access those drives is enter the directory where they are mounted to (probably /mnt/cdrom1 and /mnt/cdrom2, but I dont know). Also, you might want to try to use the devices kio-slave (in konqueror type devices:/ and it will display all devices that are configured and you can access them with simple clicks).
sidenote: This will be replaced with a media:/ kioslave in the next version of kde, but for now, devices:/ is the way to go

Also, if you are interested in the mount process, you may want to have a look at the /etc/fstab file (man fstab can help you with that), it will have all information about what your cd drives are and where they are mounted by default.

If you want to mount them manually (not advisable!! I dont even know if that will work with supermount enabled), the command is indeed something like
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
As usual it's not really this simple though.
First of all, if you can use /dev/cdrom depends on your setup. /dev/cdrom is usually just a link to the actual device (so to speak). It's more likely /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd as your control center told you.
The more correct command would be:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
the "-t iso9660" means that you are trying to mount a cdrom drive. You probably wont need it, but it can't hurt. Make sure you have root priviledges when trying to mount (su -).

You should not have to deal with mounting in modern linux distributions. Try accessing the folder the device is usually mounted to and try to use the "devices:/" thing in kde.

Good luck,
- drowstar
