Unhappy Mount ...pls help me

Hi,
In my machine i have /dev/sda2 mounted on /home.
can /dev/sda2 be mounted in some other directory.
If yes then will the contents of /home move to the new directory where it will be mounted or will it remain intact? Similarly can /usr is mounted in some other directory ? All these partitions were created when i installed Linux on my machine.

pls help

You can mount any partition at any point on the directory tree.

A few simple rules:
Data is in partitions--the directory structure simply helps you find it
If you change the mount point of a partition, the data will now appear at the new mount point.
If you have data in a directory--and you try to use that directory name as a mount point, the old data will get hidden.

Example:
One big partition--mounted at / : All the subdirectories will realte to data on that partition. If you mount (attach) another partition somewhere, it will supersede whatever was associated with that mount point (directory) AND whatever was under it.

Play with it a bit to get used to it....

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. But suppose if i change my mount point of /dev/sda3 which was /usr to /misc will the machine run all the applications after rebooting without making the necessary changes in /etc/fstab.
And if the changes are made in /etc/fstab too, will the machine function smoothly.

pls help

When linux boots up, it will read /etc/fstab and then mount the partitions according to the enteries in it. So if you want your change of mounting points to persist across reboots, you'll have to update your /etc/fstab. Note that your files will now appear under the new mounting point, in other words under another diretory. The change in location of the files might cause problems for applications that expect to find the files in the old location: espeacially if you are changing the mounting point for /usr
