Morphix install password errors

Hi everyone
I have been tinkering with linux for a couple of months - basically knoppix and now morphix.. i prefer morphix on the face of it mainly 'cos of gnome. Initially i had problems installing morphix on a sata set up - hangs at cd boot unless i set sata to compatible in the bios. Thinking a recompile with a later kernel version may sort that issue out and i successfully got knoppix running with a 2.6.3 kernel upgrade so i do have a little exp with make xconfig.. (yeah i know morphix doesnt come with make or a c compiler and lots of other stuff - i have d/l'd those essentials onto a fat shared partition)
I do have questions regarding that but they'll wait for another post

Now after having morphix installed successfully and a couple of reinstalls later due to finding my way around the o/s - hehe i now am having dramas with passwords.. Install seems to go fine on multiple partitions (i.e. /boot /root /home /usr and /var) then when i reboot - at the gnome log in screen i enter the user name and password that install asked me for and bam - it gives login error - incorrect password! (same for root as well) Any ideas?
Yeah i have checked caps lock and i have reinstalled and tried again several times with different (read-simpler) passwords..

i have googled myself stupid without finding a solution..
will post what logs/text i can extract if it helps

thanks in advance peeps
