Monitoring Directories and Files

Hi guys

A question has been put to me from my university and I'm lost as to where to begin, hopefully you can help.

In learning and understanding Linux which Directories and Files could you monitor for changes.

Any help you can give me would be great

Thanks

The man page for inotify is a good place to start. That's what I usually use when I need to monitor a directory or file for changes

Unless it's work-related I'd say best start with your course material.

I have a fair understanding of how Inotify works, the problem is the vagueness of the question. The question only asks which directories and files could you consider monitoring. Unfortunately our Course Material is very unhelpful.

The vagueness is probably deliberate. You decide then justify your decision. I expect it is the latter that is being sought.

Well I'd guess you'd want to monitor the directories and files that contained or will contain information that you are interested in for whatever reason and I'd also guess it'd vary based on the application in question

How about you offer file names and your exact reasons for monitoring it and we say yes or no?
