monitor screen centering issues

I am having issues getting my monitor to display correctly with linux. The contents of the screen toward the left or right edge tend to get squished together as if the screen were very curved at the sides and you were looking at it straight on. I don't have this issue with Windows and have tried correcting this using both "control center" type of controls as well as with the monitor controls, with no success. Any suggestions?

Any sort of "curvy" distortion is a problem with the monitor not properly displaying the signal sent to it from the computer. Often when this happens, it's something which you can adjust with the monitor's controls.

However, when the horizontal or vertical sync rates are simply beyond the maximum capabilities of the monitor, no amount of fiddling with the monitor's controls will fix it. The only way to fix it is to move down to a lower resolution and/or refresh rate.

What resolution and refresh rate are you running Windows with? You'll probably want to use the same resolution and refresh rate in Linux.

Bingo. Thank you very much. I had the refresh rate set at 75Hz. I reset it to 60 like in Windoze and now it's perfect.

every time I reboot I have to reset the refresh rate at 60 Hz from 75 using Control Center in KDE. where do I change this so that it is permanent? I've looked in xorg.conf where the other Display options that I know of are listed.

There should be a line or two setting ranges for the vertical and horizontal refresh rates. You want the vertical refresh rate to have a maximum of 60, instead of what it is now (75 or higher).
