modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables

I am using kernel version 2.4.19 on Red Hat 9.0

when I am trying to execute the command
iptables -L
it is showing following error:

modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables
iptables v1.2.7a: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

When I am trying to start the iptables service by
service iptables start

It is showing following error:

Flushing all current rules and user defined chains:modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables
iptables v1.2.7a: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
