how do we modify the linux packages source codes are there any specific s/w for it?

Yes...those are called "editors". Like vi, nano, pico, Anjuta, etc., etc., etc....the list is very long. And how you modify the source code would be to OPEN the file, change something, then save it.

i want to modify the Linux(ubuntu) softwares packages that i install ,for example a simple network monitor i dont want the background image of it and i want to add little more features

suppose that i use vi ,but which file to edit,since there are several files in it ?

No idea, since you don't say WHICH 'network monitor" you want to modify, or what you want to add. If you're writing code, it's up to YOU to figure out the code and make the changes, and where/which files to change.

And you need to spell out your words.
