well in linux
com 1 would be equal to
ttyS0 and so on...
com 2 would be
ttyS1
usually if you set them manually and it doesn't recognize the settings, you have to manually adjust this in linux from the command line with the
setserial command.
usually you can do this command for example:

setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 9
if you set up the modem as Com3 with IRQ 9....
