Modem not detected. Now what?

My RedHat 8.0 is not able to detect the modem. Here're the specs:

Type: internal
Model: QXCOMM SoftK56 Data Fax
Manufacturer: Conexant Systems, Inc.

(This info is obtained when the machine is running Windows 2000)

What should I do to get it recognized and properly installed in the Linux system?

The best option is probably to buy a real hardware modem.

The other option is to check to see if the modem has support by checking at linmodems.org. I have a version of conexant modem myself and it's not supported.

If it's a desktop you can get an externel serial port modem. If it's a laptop then a pccard modem would be best.

I don't know how a driver is installed on a Linux system if it fails to be probed, installed and configured automatically by the system itself.

Does it work in a similar way as on the Windows platform, where you're prompted to select the driver files from a medium, and then the system reads the files and copies them to a certain system directory, and writes some info in the registry?

No, there is no registry, drivers are called kernel modules in the linux world.
Look here to see if your modem will work, not all conexant modems are supported.
