Modem issue

Running RH 7.1 kernel 2.4.2.2

Modem is an external 56K U.S. robotics: ran minicom and received an error:
Device /dev/ttyS1 is locked.

Any ideas on how I can "free" up the locked process?

ttyS1 isn't a "process" itself...I'd call it a device file. anyway, did you run that as root? if you didn't, then you might have permissions problem..

I agree that ttyS1 is a "device" - what I intended to get across was - something is hanging the "process" not that ttyS1 is a process. Sorry for the confusion.

I am logged on as root.

Just to add, are you sure it's /dev/ttyS1 and not /dev/ttyS0?

There may be a process that has tried to use that port and locked it. Take a look at the output of

ps aux

and see what you might find.

I found the problem....went into /var/lock and noticed a file called in the folder called:

LCK..ttyS1

removed the file and am now able to access minicom again. I do appreciate everyone's help.
