Modem config-vol off

I have just installed RH 8.0 and configered Red Hat device control and set the
modem-vol off,but it still squaks when I connect to the net.Is there any
other method too really silence the modem(apart from desoldering the
speakers).When I connect with KPPP the modem is silent.

Well why don't you just use KPPP....oh and are you using external or internal?
