Migrating to another system, would like to keep user settings and profiles..

Hi, I'm migrating to a different system/distro, but I would like to keep the user settings, like their password, home directory, etc..

is there an easy way to do it?

just keep the home directory and /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.
if the home directory is not a separate partition, use tar to back it up.

even if the distro is different?

there seems to be no problem for me to migrate from Redhat to SuSE then back to Redhat. All settings are preserved.
