migrating BSD to Slackware passwd file

So my work decides to start to migrate from older bsd distros to slackware for enterprise software support. I'm working on are main internal webserver and I'm trying to migrate all the users over. I set up the bsd master.passwd with a password cracker, but its moving a little slower then my boss would like. So I'm attempting to manualy do this. I've figured out the format of the slackware /etc/passwd file and changed approiate uid and guid's to match the users. There was a few more things i had to tweak also. I also chowned their users directorys. I am able to login through a tty with a couple of the accounts that I can test with thanks to john the ripper. My problem is when i try to ftp in with the a user, it deny's me. I've tried changed their groups in the passwd file but no luck. When i add a new user, i can ftp in with no problems.
