Microsoft .net for GNU/Linux?
 

Ximian is working (together with Microsoft) on making Microsoft .net available for/on Linux.

What is you opinion about it?

No they don't.

You are right, they don't directly work with Microsoft.... I admit, I was a bit out of line there.
It's not really Ximian (either), but the Mono Project, that's working on a .NET implementation (or support) for GNU/Linux and Unix, etc. But the Mono Project is part of Ximian, ain't it?

Anyway, I just wanted to get your opinion on .NET, nothing else...

I do not like Microsoft, but if .NET makes it easier to develop, AND it's not controlled by Microsoft, I'm for it. But can anyone guarantee me that?

.NET and C# are nice, though no signifigant advantages to JAVA.

But hey, once MONO is complete, people (win developers probobly) will be able to create applications that run on every platform w/o a recompile.

I know JAVA can do it, but I believe that this matches the native machines Look n' feel.

I rememver reading an interview with the founder of GNOME (I forget his name) a few months back where he talked about how he liked how .NET works. More info on the project can be found at:

So, the Mono Project is about cloning the Microsoft .NET development platform!
But will it stop there?
My big concern is the Hailstorm (part of Microsoft .NET), the Passport centralized single-signon system that is being integrated into Windows XP. Do you get my picture? A centralized server, that holds ALL the information of people around the globe!!! This would of course be a Microsoft controlled server (it is Microsoft .NET - don't forget that!), but do we really want Microsoft to have all this information?
I use GNU/Linux to get decentralized (and for freedom, which (of course) could be the same), but if too much of .NET gets implemented (or available) to other platforms, would'n it give Microsoft the opportunity to collect information?
I'm sorry, but Microsoft .NET is more than just the development platform. Alright the Mono Project will clone it, but what then?

I'm babbling...
But this is a big issue for me. I do not want Microsoft in the back door! NEVER - then I rather not use a computer!

if the .Net platform could function perfectly on Linux without us having to bow to M$, then yes id like it.

I dont think that will happen though, M$ cant let Linux be too compatible, otherwise everybody would just run Linux instead
