Mencoder question.

I've never used mencoder before, so I'm just a bit confused on how it works exactly. I have a file called "file.rm" --it's a RealMovie file-- and I want to convert it to MPEG4 with Audio. What command do I type? And what libraries/other software do I need to do this? And, as I know I'll be doing this soon, how would I convert I raw stream-dump from a DVD into MPEG4 as well? Thanks a lot for any help.

From my understanding and reading the mencoder howto/man page, you can't ecode a real media file to mpeg. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though, but I've never seen it done or mentioned before.

Okay, I was unaware of that. Does anyone know of a way to do this then?

mencoder -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video -oac copy <other options> media.avi -o output.mpg

According to this page:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/encoding.html

That's an example of encoding to mpg. Here's how I'd try it:
mencoder -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:vbitrate=1100 -oac copy realvideo.rm -o mpegvideo.mpg

Don't know if it'd work though, but that's how I'd try to do it.

Cool

mpeg encoding is still beta and not useful as it doesn't encode audio to mp2 yet, so you won't actually get a REAL mpeg file. anything wrong with a nice modern avi?

No, avi isn't bad. I just need it to play in quicktime. So as long as it would work in QTime. It's fine.
