meaning of LABEL="/" in fstab


what is the meaning of the statement LABEL='/' in /etc/fstab



some partitions have.this and some donot.
any body please help me.

thats were the device is to be mounted, root FS's are mounted on /

You can assign a name to a partition and this is called a label. In your example the root partition is labeled as /. The benefits are if you move the root partition to another drive or another partition the bootloader is still able to find where it is.

If you do not use a label then you need to specify the partition ID as in:
/dev/hda1 ....

You can use tune2fs to add / change a label.
