Ok im still not able to install linux7.0
just wondering what's wrong

If i do the following ?is it ok

i have a C: partition then there is a swap partion then there is a linux / i.e root partition and the last small partition which is J(virtualy) is the boot partition .
NOw i install the os using these conditions.

Would linux boot without any problem?

linux 7.0???? is that suse? redhat? mandrake? slackware?

you've really not given enough useful information, tehre is nothing wrong in what you have described from what i can understand of it. do you actually have a proper problem?.. an error message somewhere??

Welcome to the past dude. Could you describe you problem a little better? You can install lilo into your MBR or make a boot disk, whichever is fine for Linux.

how to boot from floppy.and how to make that floppy.
i have linux installed ,lilo installed but i don't know about mbr
so just tell me a bootable disk so that when i want to use linux i just insert the disk and wala.

Check out this page. Scroll down to " Making an emergency boot floppy ". You'll be using the mkbootdisk command to make the floppy. Also, read the man page for mkbootdisk.

If the root( ~2GB) and boot(~16MB) partitions are sufficiently large it will install. When you select the partition size using disk druid( you can't manage anything with auto install ) it will tell you if you have selected too many packages to fit into the existing partitions. This assumes that all disk sectors are valid.

However, you immediately raised the issue of the boot record and you didn't say why you suspected this to be a problem. If you left a DOS vfat partition at the begining after overwriting a linux install, then you won't have a linux MBR left. You use Windows terminoligy for the partition names and you have far too few partitions named(3) to have a J: partition. Besides, it would be a hdj partition under Linux.

Start over from the begining, use a CD boot(set the BIOS for this on boot up if necessary ), or use the floppy boot and install from the begining. Delete all partitions, if you won't have a dual boot with Windows, then build new partitions according to a plan for your intended installation. Give each partition sufficient size for expansion, except for the boot partition, and your install should work the first time. Be sure to have each partition tested before it is used in case there are bad sectors.

at last i did it.I have installed Redhat linux 7.o
BUT there is a little problem.
I didn't install lilo and now every time when i want to run linux i have to insert that linux bootup floppy.
actually i have installed winxp and win98 as well.
SO is there any way that i got the option of all three to them at one time i.e
lilo only asks whether u want to run linux or windows (No linux,xp,win98) while on the other hand xp loader only shows win98 and xp

Youll want to set lilo up to give you the options Windows and linux then have windows link to the XP loader. Or open up your lilo.conf and add a other option for the other windows version

Look into the documentation to see what GRUB takes to install after installation. It is getting rave reviews and scripts to do most of the things you want for GRUB operation are listed on several sites.

Otherwise, you will need to buy a delux copy of System Commander and install it over the Linux and see if it works. Since you are trying to cram a host of patches onto the original load without a plan this is likely to fail because Windows needs to load first on the disk in order of OS release. Don't try to run more than one Windows in a single partition.
