manually controlling cpu speed (not overclocking... well maybe, im not sure)

ive just orderd a laptop for myself.
apparently the fan can get quite noisey, so i am looking into manually controlling the speed of the cpu to reduce heat output (and extend battery life). The chip is a Pentium M Processor 750 (1.86GHz).
i dont know how overcloaking works, nor do i think it is a likely solution to my problem
i want something quick and easy to change on and off at a moments notice.

(id be more clear, but its way past mmy bed time, ill clarify in the morning.)

any ideas?

You may be able to UNDERclock it to decrease the fan speed.

But you'd probably be better off just buying a new & quiter fan for it...

I use cpufreqd, automatically controls the cpu speed , it's very configurable and works great...keeps the heat pretty low on my Pentium M 1.5 GHz. The fan rarely comes on, and I get about 3 and a half hours out of the battery. It even lets you specify what programs you want to watch for to speed up the processor (such as make).

There is also cpudyn...works ok but it seems to only like 2 speeds, min and max, and it ramps up the speed pretty often when it doesn't need to (scrolling in or moving a gui window)
