MandrakeUpdate Doesn't Update Correctly

I recently updated from 9.2 to 10.0. Before the jump, running MankdrakeUpdate produced no security updates. After updating, I saw a whole host of updates. For instance, mozilla, rsync and cvs had updates available.

This is the heart of the problem. The program MandrakeUpdate does not seem to be updating correctly.

Now, I realize that a newer version of Mandrake includes different packages so the updates provided will be different, but the basic stuff like rsync, mozilla, and cvs should still have updates from version to version. In fact, the security advisories on MandrakeLinux.com say these updates are available for both 9.2 and 10.0 but seem to imply that you must go to the 10.0 folder on the server to get the updates.

For instance, running 9.2 the latest rsync was 2.5.6 according to urpmi and the several mirror sites I logged onto to examine the RPMs. Under the 10.0 folder, 2.6.0 is the latest version. The MandrakeUpdate GUI reports that a security update for rsync, 2.6.0, is available for download.

It seems that the only way to update the packages is one of both ways:

1. Always install the latest version so Mandrake will look under the folder with that version's name, which seems to be kept up-to-date.

2. In the Software Media Manager, manually point the folder to the newest version so the latest versions of the RPMs will be compared ("current" is a symbolic link to the folder of the latest version).

Additionally, I have tried YUM but the Mandrake repository link the site provides is invalid. In fact, logging onto the site specified yields an official Mandrake update repository, not the header files required by YUM.

Is anyone experiencing something similar? What did you do to ensure that you always get the latest security updates?

Whenever you want to do something different than what your distribution's automatic update program wants to do you should do it by hand. Use gftp to download the security update and install it with rpm. This is easier than trying to beat MankdrakeUpdate or whatever into submission.
