Mandrake Software Manager
 

I've been using 8.0 for a while now - all works well, apart from my Software manager - the gui which hels with rpms and the like.

After starting, it crashes at 60% - and then I have to kill it.

Can I delete this feature with the install CDs and try and install it again?

Anyone know of a way to fix?

Mandrake also comes with some other package software. You could try those. Package Manager is very handy - it sorts out your dependancies and stuff - but not a necessity. If all you want to do is re-install PM, you could try mounting the CDs, looking for the relavent RPM file, and typing rpm -i xxxx.rpm --force from the command line.

Thanks Thymox - I'd never heard of Package Manager - will it be installed - or is it downloadable already? If so, where from?

It is probably already installed. If you're using KDE, and browsing your harddisk with Konqueror, then right-click on any RPM file, go to 'Open With...' and you should have two selections: Software Manager and Package Manager (or something). If you haven't got it installed, it'll definetely be on one of the installation CDs. It was the default package program (for KDE) under Mandy 7.1 and 7.2, and I know for a fact that it's been included in Mandy 8.1 (that's what I use), so I'm guessing you should have it already. Since be default Mandy uses Software Manager, if it has not been installed, you might want to install it from the command line (it's not hard - just type man rpm first, read the instructions, and install). Or, try running gnomerpm (or whatever).

Just typed in kpackage and it works fine - seems better than Software manager (although I've never used it!)

no you're wrong. :D kpackage is just a bog standard rpm GUI, but the Software Manager is a frontend for the urpm system, NOT rpm. this means it contains referential databases for UNINSTALLED software aswell as currently nistalled stuff, and will automatically fix dependency issues for you, which is an utter godsend for a newbie.

i'd just recommend reinstalling the rpm for it via console, it'll take a small amount of setting up in order to build all its databases, but it's worth it easily.

Everytime, but if kpackage is already installed, would it not make more sense to use a GUI RPM program to re-install the GUI URPMI program? We don't want to scare them off too quickly. :D Personally I still think that urpmi is a bloody marvelous tool, when used properly - not just for newbs. Take the apt-get thing. I've heard that it sorts out the dependencies for you...isn't that what the urpmi thing is supposed to do aswell? Now, the Debian people can stop shouting about it! :D
